Retail fuel prices in the United Arab Emirates hit a record high this month after authorities raised prices by 50 fils per liter from April 1.

With Super 98 costing Dh3.75 per litre, Special 95 at Dh3.62 and E-Plus 91 at Dh3.55 in April 2022, this is the highest price on record since the UAE announced the deregulation of local retail fuel prices in August 2015. Prices have more than doubled since the UAE removed subsidies and brought local retail fuel prices in line with international crude rates. Prices have increased significantly since February due to the military conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Below are some of the tips shared by Thomas Edelmann, Managing Director of Road Safety UAE, on how motorists nationwide can reduce fuel costs:

Pay attention to your driving style

• Avoid accelerating over short distances (eg to the next red light, etc.)

• Display a far-sighted, fluid and defensive driving style

• Avoid sudden braking

• Drive at a constant speed and use cruise control when possible

Take good care of your vehicle

• Check tires and correct tire pressure

• Engine maintenance (air filter, thermostats, fuel injectors, ignition system, etc.)

Do not run your engine unnecessarily:

• Especially in confined spaces like the garage or underground parking lot to avoid toxic exhaust gases

• If you have to wait and need air conditioning, find a seat inside instead

Use of the car:

• Drive the car type/size and engine size that suits your needs (bigger cars and more powerful engines generally use more fuel and are less easy to drive)

• Car sharing/rotation (eg for daily trips)

• Use public transport

• Avoid short journeys when you can use other means of transport

• Plan well, combine your trips to reduce the amount of driving

New automotive technologies:

• Advanced cars offer several functions to alert on maintenance needs and to increase environmental friendliness (maintenance alerts, tire pressure alerts, red light start/stop function, etc.)

• Hybrid cars and electric cars improve fuel economy, reduce fuel costs and reduce emissions
