The 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 R gets extra energy and downforce | Autoblog
Porsche has rescued a longstanding custom by unveiling the all-new 911 GT3 R. Based on the current 992-generation 911, the track coupe benefits from an even bigger and more powerful naturally aspirated flat-six engine, added downforce and suspension modifications.
Development work began in 2019, and engineers set to work on an extensive review of improvements over the last-generation, cost-effective model. Their goals included improving drivability and handling and lowering operating costs. The final level is necessary because the 911 GT3 R may be eligible to participate in a wider collection of races from 2024, when GT3-spec vehicles will be allowed to race in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) of the FIA. This means that vehicles like the 911 GT3 R can be invited to line up on the starting grid for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Power for the GT3 R comes from a flat-six engine whose displacement has been increased by 5% to 4.2 litres. It develops around 565 horsepower and it spins the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox linked to a pair of paddle shifters. The engine remains rear-mounted, but is angled forward 5.5 levels to free up additional space for the rear diffuser. Porsche also notes that it moved several parts, including the air conditioning system compressor and alternator, to an area in front of the engine to improve the car’s weight distribution.
Mechanics will be able to make changes to the suspension setup using shims that eliminate the need to spend time realigning the system after it has been adjusted. The suspension tweaks made to the GT3 R have also reduced tire placement, helping to lower race prices. Porsche notes that it has moved the rear wheels further to lengthen the wheelbase and reduce the load on the rear tires, and the braking system includes six-piston front calipers that grip large 15.35-inch rotors and calipers four-piston rear mounted around 14.56. -thumb rotors.
Carbon fiber body panels and an aluminum-steel composite body help keep the weight in check, although Porsche hasn’t printed the weight of the 911 GT3 R. Visually, the GT3 R is characterized by a redesigned physical equipment and a huge rear wing mounted on a set of goosenecks. There’s more to it than meets the eye, though: the part of the underbody that’s forward of the front axle is raised to improve airflow to the rear diffuser. All advised, the 911 GT3 R has additional downforce compared to its predecessor, but the modifications do not create additional drag.
Inside, Porsche moved the driver’s seat closer to the middle of the car for ergonomics. The seat is up, though the steering wheel and pedals are adjusted, and some ramps save a few seconds per pit stop by forcing the six-point harness to lock sooner.
Priced at $567,210 off Vacation Location and Pick, the Porsche 911 GT3 R is on sale now through Porsche Motorsport North America. It will make its competitive debut on the 2023 version of the Daytona 24 scheduled for January 2023.
