The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer Will Drain Your Wallet In Fuel Costs
The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is one of the best new 3-row SUVs. Part of its appeal (aside from the fact that it’s a revived throwback to an old favorite) is its size. The Wagonner is huge, rivaling SUVs like the Chevy Suburban and Toyota Sequoia. Still, there’s one major downside to the Jeep Wagoneer, and that’s its fuel economy. Is the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer’s fuel economy really that bad, and is there anything you can do to lessen the blow to your wallet?
What is the gas mileage of the new Jeep Wagoneer?

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer gets 15 mpg, according to Car and Driver. It’s not great, even for a large SUV. In fact, fueleconomy.gov says you’ll pay $7,500 more over five years than you would for an average new car. Sure, the Wagoneer is a lot bigger than the average new car, but consider this: the 2022 Chevy Suburban will only cost you $6,500 more over that same five years. Maybe $1,000 over 60 months isn’t a big deal, but it’s worth noting.
You’ll likely spend about $3,350 a year on fuel costs with the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer. It’ll cost you about $5.59 to drive 25 miles, which is a lot when you think about that away football game. Add to that the fact that it’ll cost you over $100 to fill your gas tank right now, and you probably realize you’re not going to save any money on gas in the 2022 Wagoneer.
What gas does the Wagoneer take?
2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer takes on 2022 Cadillac Escalade and 2022 Lincoln Navigator for luxury status
The fuel tank capacity of the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is 26.5 gallons. It uses premium gasoline and its 2WD model has a 6.4-liter 8-cylinder engine. Its 4WD engine is a 5.7-liter V8 developing 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque.
Car and Driver notes that, as wonderful as the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer might be (it’s the luxury version of the Wagoneer), its fuel economy doesn’t stand a chance next to similarly sized rivals. They say it’s “less efficient than other American luxury SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.” There’s a very good reason for that – the Grand Wagoneer’s fuel economy is even worse than the regular old Wagoneer, at 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.

Pricing for the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer starts at $57,995. It’s incredibly nice (although of course it’s not as luxurious as the Grand Wagoneer). It has a well-appointed leather interior, a digital instrument panel and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen that can be upgraded to a 12-inch screen. It can also accommodate up to 8 people with the right configuration, although the second row captain seats only allow up to 7 passengers.
The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer’s fuel economy is pretty bad, but that might not be reason enough to make you look elsewhere. After all, it’s a gorgeous new SUV with a lot to offer. If you can empty your wallet every time you go to the gas station, you might still love the new Wagoneer.
