Passengers on a plane in New Jersey screamed in fear as an engine on the plane caught fire as it hurtled down the runway.

The plane to Fort Lauderdale was forced to abort takeoff from Atlantic City after a bird strike appeared to damage the right engine, causing flammable fuel to leak onto the tarmac.

Those traveling could only watch in horror and flames erupted from the rear of the engine as they waited for the crew’s instructions on what to do next.

People sitting by the windows could be heard shouting “Fire! as panic quickly spread throughout the cabin.

During this time, the crew of the Spirit Airlines jet remained calm, telling the passengers to stay in their seats.

‘Stay seated! Stay seated! Stay seated! ‘ begged the crew.

“Holy shit! Shouted a woman. “Open that door and let us out now!” Come on, said another and they jumped from their seats.

Very few appeared to be listening with footage shot inside the cabin showing people rushing into the overhead compartments to retrieve their luggage before getting off the plane.

A man could be heard telling a passenger to “relax”, but this was clearly something many struggled to do under the circumstances.

Flight attendants said airport fire crews were rushing to the scene and passengers were sitting down.

Before many could return to their seats, the captain gave the order to evacuate, but to avoid using the exit above the wing where the engine was burning.

‘Clear out! Clear out! Clear out! The right engine caught fire. We hit a bird on take off. Please avoid the right engine, ”said the captain.

Flight attendants asked people to leave their luggage behind. ‘Leave it all! Go fast. Jump on the slide! ‘ they shouted.

Outside the window, photos obtained by The Lakewood Scoop show thick black smoke rising into the sky.

This only served to panic the passengers further, but by the time all 102 passengers and seven crew members jumped off the emergency slides, the flames were extinguished after being sprayed with foam by a fire engine from the airport.

The aircraft cabin never caught fire and no smoke ever entered inside.

The South Jersey Transportation Authority said all 109 people aboard the Airbus A320, 102 passengers and seven crew members had been safely evacuated.

Once out of the plane, the passengers ran to take cover on the grass at the edge of the runway, but even after getting out of the stricken plane, the drama was not over.

At one point, a small dog could be seen scurrying across the tarmac as it searched for its owner, while an elderly woman who slid down the slide also landed face first on the ground.

Two people reported minor injuries “which required medical transportation,” the authority said.

“The captain safely braked and brought the aircraft to a stop, received an indication of engine damage and ordered an evacuation in accordance with our standard procedures,” Spirit Airlines said, noting that the aircraft did never left the ground.

The fire was extinguished and the aircraft was left on the runway pending an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Passengers received a full refund along with a voucher for future travel and the option to continue to Fort Lauderdale on another plane later on Saturday, the airline said.
