IVECO and Hyundai Show First Fuel Cell Large Van at IAA Hannover as Partnership Grows

/EIN News/ — Hanover, 19 September 2022. Iveco Group (MI: IVG) and Hyundai Motor Company today unveiled the first IVECO eDAILY fuel cell electric vehicle at IAA Transportation 2022 in Hannover.

Both the Iveco Group and Hyundai have ambitious sustainability goals, as reflected in their individual commitments, and are leveraging their collaboration to help accelerate the transition to net zero carbon. Since the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in March 2022, they have formed several joint working groups on various technological aspects to explore ways of complementing each other on the development of electric vehicles and alternative propulsions.

Earlier in July, the two companies jointly announced hydrogen-powered IVECO BUS vehicles equipped with Hyundai’s fuel cell system, with expected relevant benefits in terms of performance and emissions. Today they unveil the eDAILY Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), which represents the future potential of IVECO’s longest-selling and best-selling large van, with a range that currently includes traditional and methane/ biomethane, and a new battery electric vehicle. (BEV).

The working prototype eDAILY FCEV is equipped with Hyundai’s 90 kW hydrogen fuel cell system and a 140 kW electric motor. Six tanks provide a combined storage capacity of 12 kg of hydrogen. The 7.2 tonne GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) prototype has been tested in Europe, confirming a range of 350 km, a maximum payload of 3 tonnes and a refueling time of 15 minutes. While eDAILY BEV, also launched today at IAA, is best suited for short journeys, eDAILY FCEV will be an ideal option for deliveries requiring a long distance with a high payload.

The battery from FPT Industrial, the Iveco Group’s powertrain brand, is an integral part of the eDAILY FCEV, while the fuel cell system supplied by Hyundai is the latest step in the hydrogen mobility journey of more than 20 years of business. Hyundai’s advanced fuel cell technology is already being used in various applications, particularly in the commercial vehicle sector. The system has traveled more than 4.5 million km in Switzerland on heavy trucks, demonstrating its power and reliability. The slogan “Engineered by Iveco Group, powered by Hyundai” reflects this mutually beneficial cooperation and will also drive similar initiatives in the future.

“Following the recent announcement that IVECO BUS will equip its future hydrogen buses with our fuel cells, the hydrogen eDAILY is another concrete example of what we can achieve by working together to accelerate the transition to carbon neutrality. commented Martin Zeilinger. , head of Hyundai Motor Company’s commercial vehicle development technical unit. “The partnership between the two companies has proven to be very successful and we expect better results in the years to come.”

“On the day we announce the completion of our battery-electric eDAILY project, we are thrilled to introduce the world’s first hydrogen-powered eDAILY. Based on this prototype, we aim to roll out a small series of FCEV vans to be tested with selected customers by the end of next year,” said Marco Liccardo, Chief Technology & Digital Officer, Iveco Group. “This exciting step in our sustainability journey is the result of the fruitful collaboration between the Iveco Group and Hyundai Motor Company and shows how we can achieve tangible results in a short period of time by combining our strengths.”

The Iveco Group and Hyundai are also exploring other options for collaboration, ranging from cross-selling products in certain regions of the world to joint developments in vehicle automation and connectivity. In addition, Hyundai is also considering sourcing opportunities from FPT Industrial in the area of next-generation conventional powertrains for commercial vehicles. Developments such as these demonstrate the companies’ commitment to seizing all worthwhile opportunities and both parties are confident that ongoing projects will yield results in the near future.

The eDAILY FCEV is on display at the IVECO stand located in Hall 24, Deutsche Messe AG, at IAA Transportation from September 20-25.
