Honeywell Successfully Begins Next Generation T55 Engine Testing for U.S. Army Chinook Helicopters

PHOENIX, December 1, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) has taken a milestone with the U.S. military by being the first engine to test (FETT) under its cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) for the engine of new generation for Chinook helicopters. The CRADA program and T55-714C engine tests are scheduled over a two-year period to validate the benefits and ease of integration of the new engine variant on the Chinook platform. This will allow the US military to assess the capabilities of the latest version of Honeywell’s combat-proven T55 engine.

Testing of the first T55-GA-714C engine successfully started at Honeywell Phoenix test facilities in November to verify the design and establish the performance benchmark for installation of the engine on the flight test aircraft. This is a critical next step for the US military to test the new capability of the T55-GA-714C engine for its latest CH-47 Chinook helicopters. To date, the engine has been tested with maximum continuous power, demonstrating mechanical operation and acquiring key performance data. Further tests are planned at significantly higher power levels.

With 6,000 horsepower, Honeywell’s upgraded engine is 23% more powerful and uses 8% less fuel than the current T55, even under the most demanding operating conditions. New modifications also make the next-gen T55 easier to maintain with lower operating costs, providing increased preparation for the fighter.

The T55-GA-714C engine is specially designed for next-generation military operators and will enhance the ability of the Chinook helicopter to transport troops and heavy cargo for the US military. Since the engine is closely based on the T55 version currently in use, minimal airframe modifications are required – the same intake, exhaust and engine cell mounts are used. This design provides the US military with a major engine upgrade without the need for retraining its maintenance and operations personnel or making major changes to the aircraft.

In 2020, Honeywell won a competitive repair and overhaul contract for the T55. In addition, Honeywell completed a new world-class engine repair and overhaul facility at Phoenix. This decision made it possible to carry out repair and overhaul work on the T55-GA-714A engine at the same location as the production of new engines. The T55 Center of Excellence provides manpower, facilities and engineering resources shared between the two engine lines and supplies up to 20 engines per month to the U.S. military, military and commercial customers foreigners.

Honeywell first delivered the T55 engine to the US Army in 1961 at 2,200 horsepower on the CH-47A helicopter. Since then, the engine power has almost tripled to 6000 horsepower.
