Citroen C5 Aircross vs Jeep Compass: Performance and Fuel Consumption Comparison

The Jeep Compass and the Citroen C5 Aircross are two options if you want a high-end mid-size SUV. Both offer multiple features, good looks and a punchy diesel engine. The duo therefore certainly deserves to be taken into consideration. But which one is the fastest and the most economical?

To find out, we put both SUVs on the road for a full test drive. With the VBox attached, we line up the two to tabulate their performance. But before we delve deeper, let’s take a look at their specifications:

6-speed manual / 9-speed AT

Both receive a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine. However, the C5 Aircross unit is 7PS and 50Nm more powerful than the compass. That said, the Citroën’s only transmission is an 8-speed automatic. In the Compass, however, you have a choice of a 6-speed manual and a 9-speed automatic. Opting for the latter is opting for all-wheel drive.

In this test, we pitted the diesel-automatic variant of the Compass against the C5 Aircross. Here’s how the two fared in our performance test:

Although the C5 Aircross was hit the hardest by the unruly monsoons of Maharashtra, it managed to overtake the compass during the 0-100 km / h run. This could be because the Jeep’s gearbox always starts from second gear. However, in the 20 to 80 km / h race, the Compass overtook the Citroën. But only by a mustache.

The C5 Aircross, with its front-wheel drive, is the most fuel-efficient car in town and on the highway. But we couldn’t test the fuel consumption of the revamped Compass. However, based on the pre-facelift model, the Compass AT’s all-wheel drive prevents it from being the more frugal of the two.

Price and verdict

Price excluding showroom

Rs 30.8 lakh to Rs 32.30 lakh

Rs 17.19 lakh to Rs 28.64 lakh

Both models are equally impressive in performance and can cover long distances with ease. However, the Compass is a little less fuel efficient than the C5 Aircross. That said, given that the diesel-automatic Jeep has better hardware (read AWD) and a longer feature list, the Compass seems more cost effective, especially when its top-of-the-line variant underestimates the C5 Aircross by around Rs. 4 lakh (on the road).
