Airline prices are skyrocketing, and one of the main reasons is the cost of fuel.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, thefts increased 18.6% in one month.

United Airlines communications director Josh Earnest noted that soaring airline ticket prices are a direct result of fuel prices, just as Americans were ready to travel again after the pandemic.

“We’re actually going to be paying $10 billion — with a ‘B’ — more in fuel this year than we did in 2019,” Earnest said on Fox’s America’s Newsroom. “The increase we had to absorb is incredible.”

Earnest called for an aggressive energy policy that would reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil.

“One of the ways to do that is to invest in sustainable aviation fuel,” he said on the show.

United has already made a major investment in sustainable fuels, noting that the airline produced jet fuel from municipal waste and tested a flight last year.

“In December, United was actually the first-ever commercial airline to operate a commercial flight with an engine powered by 100% sustainable aviation fuel,” he said.

United is investigating other sustainable fuels that could simultaneously reduce fuel prices and help the environment.

The airline hopes to turn the bad residual oxygen into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through a partnership with a Houston biotech company specializing in carbon dioxide.

Another problem facing the airline industry is the shortage of manpower, especially pilots, who Earnest says cannot simply be hired “off the street”.

“There are years of training and experience that someone has to go through to become a pilot,” he said.

United addresses this concern through its pilot training academy, which can potentially train 500 pilots a year.

“We’re really excited about this,” he said on America’s Newsroom. “It also gives us the opportunity to diversify the cockpit and open up this career opportunity to people who have never had this opportunity.”

Although much progress has been made towards a net zero carbon emissions trucking industry, the industry is still moving too slowly.

“We need to move faster for the sake of our children and grandchildren,” said Tom Linebarger, CEO of Cummins, during the closing keynote at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo (ACT Expo) on May 11.

Linebarger said that in terms of its mission statement, Cummins is committed to “enhancing people’s lives by fueling a more prosperous future.”

“In other words, we want to help our clients create wealth,” he explained. “And we do it all over the world. In fact, our challenge is to work in multiple applications in multiple countries dealing with multiple regulations. We try to solve problems all over the world. And that puts Cummins in a unique position to make sure we don’t destroy the planet we live on, even though Cummins engines alone have created a measurable amount of carbon in our atmosphere today.

“And I, for one, don’t want to have to explain to my grandkids one day that I didn’t do anything while the planet was warming. Climate change is the existential crisis of our lives. And we must do better to meet this challenge.

That challenge, according to Linebarger, is to create environmentally friendly products for the trucking industry that perform exactly the same way as today’s conventional products, that are exactly the same size, are maintained in exactly the same the same way and cost the same price. “And we have to get out of it,” he added. “We need to meet all of our customers’ requirements in a way that helps them decarbonize and achieve zero emissions by 20250. Several clean energy solutions

Fuel cells are advancing rapidly, but hydrogen as a combustible fuel may soon be more viable.(Cummins also unveiled a hydrogen version of its X15 that it says could be available in five years.)

“But we don’t know. We are advancing all of these technologies at the same time. It’s not cheap. But that’s what we do.

Needs beyond the vehicle

And, of course, Linebarger noted, the vehicle aspect of the quest for net zero is only one side of the equation.

“Converting all infrastructure to a fully renewable electric grid will cost several trillions of dollars in the United States alone,” he said. “In addition to that, we need a power grid twice as large as what we have today. It’s going to be a lot of work, and it won’t be cheap. We still have to figure out what technologies we’re going to use – and who’s going to pay for it all. And everyone is okay with all of that, as long as they’re not the ones paying. We need to work with the government to solve this problem. Everyone loves the idea of ​​a fuel cell truck, until someone has to pay to develop the technology.

Still, Linebarger said, Cummins is making rapid progress in its quest for net zero. “We think we’re going to grow and be more profitable because we’re looking at decarbonization,” he said. “We believe that we will be able to provide you with good solutions, which will help you outperform your competitors. NEW DELHI: AirAsia India assesses how much fuel it was able to save by using the taxibot – a piece of equipment that allows aircraft to be taxed without running the engines – on two modified planes before planning to use it throughout the fleet of aircraft, a senior executive said on Sunday.
After modifying two of its A320s, AirAsia India began using a taxibot on November 23 to tow them to Delhi International Airport.
Taxibot is a semi-robotic towbarless aircraft movement equipment that tows an aircraft from the terminal gate to the take-off point (taxi phase) and returns it to the gate after landing (taxi phase). The plane’s engines remain off when the taxibot is in operation.
When asked how much money the airline has been able to save so far through the use of the taxibot, Surinder Bansal, Vice President, Engineering, AirAsia India, told PTI: “It is under consideration… Change costs vs. savings are still being evaluated for fleet-wide implementation.”
Taxibot is dependent on the availability of ground equipment which is currently only available at Delhi airport, he said.
“We can operate up to two taxibots per aircraft per week,” Bansal said.
AirAsia India has spent around USD 2,000 (one USD = Rs 76) on each of the two A320s to modify them and make them suitable for taxibot operations, he noted.
Bansal said the engineering changes on both planes were carried out by AirAsia India’s engineering team and involved routing more than 50 new cables inside the plane, installing relays in the avionics bay and a control panel in the cockpit, and a series of operational tests prior to certification.
The airline’s taxibot operations are carried out in conjunction with Delhi-based KSU Aviation.

Researchers from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering (DESE) at IIT Delhi, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC R&D) and Ashok Leyland Ltd. have developed technology that allows a diesel-powered vehicle to run in flex-fuel mode, meaning it can run on 100% diesel or DME plus diesel. Because it has a higher cetane number (58) than conventional diesel, Dimethyl Ether (DME) is one of the alternative fuels for compression ignition engines/vehicles (51).












Through gasification and the Fisher-Tropsch synthesis process, DME can be made from biomass, coal, industrial waste, municipal solid waste, and black liquor (a pulp by-product). It can also be made by catalytic dehydration of methanol.

DME is typically stored in liquid form and phase transitions from liquid to vapor/gas are common at ambient temperatures and pressures.
