Mercury Introduces Outboard Joystick Piloting for Single-Engine Pontoons
LAKE BOTTOM, Wisconsin (January 20, 2022) -Marine Mercury®, a division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: British Columbia), today launched Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO) for single-engine pontoons. For boaters operating a pontoon powered by a single 175-600hp Mercury outboard engine with Digital Throttle and Shift Controls (DTS), this new system provides the confidence of precise 360-degree control for low-speed docking and other close-in maneuvers. . This innovative new product supports Mercury’s initiative to find ways to cascade advanced technology initially introduced on higher-end products to deliver more intuitive boating experiences for all boaters. The new product, which debuted at the 2022 Minneapolis Boat Show, won an NMMA Innovation Award Honorable Mention.
“For several years, pontoon boats have been one of the fastest growing market segments, but until now only multi-engine boats could take advantage of joystick capabilities,” said Tyler Mehrl, category manager. Mercury for controls and rigging. “Mercury JPO for Single Engine Pontoons opens up new opportunities for pontoon owners to effortlessly slide into a slipway or easily get to a fuel dock without worry.”
Available March 2022 on new build boats, JPO for single-engine pontoons is compatible with hydraulic or electro-hydraulic steering and uses integrated bow and stern thrusters that are positioned below deck, deploying and stowing according to needs. Once deployed, the thrusters work in coordination with the boat’s unique outboard motor to provide unprecedented control. The driver simply moves the joystick in the desired direction – sideways, diagonally, forwards, backwards or turning in place – and the system takes the boat where the driver wants. In addition, the system allows for combined commands, such as simultaneous rotation and sideshift.
“We are rapidly seeing more builders entering the pontoon market as this segment attracts both new and seasoned boaters due to their versatility and advanced technology,” said Nick Stickler, vice president of management. Mercury Marine’s global categories and strategic planning. “We are delighted to be working with our OEMs, offering a joystick option that will greatly enhance the pontoon experience.”
This product will be available in two configurations. The basic version is available on Mercury FourStroke, Pro XS® and SeaPro™ outboard with DTS controls. It pairs with a traditional hydraulic tiller, making it accessible to an even wider range of boats.
The Premium version uses an electronic rudder and can be equipped with a 250 to 600 hp Mercury Verado.® outboard. The Premium system can also be paired with a VesselView multifunction display to provide access to advanced features such as auto heading and route.
