Ballard to Preview New Heavy-Duty Fuel Cell Concept at IAA Transportation 2022

Ballard will preview a new heavy-duty fuel cell concept at IAA Transportation 2022.

Partnering with automotive leaders to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission fuel cell technology, Ballard will bring its unique fuel cell experience – spanning more than 100 million miles on the world’s roads, powering more than 3600 buses and trucks – at the world’s largest trade fair for logistics, commercial vehicles, buses and the transport sector.

At IAA Transportation 2022, Ballard will showcase the FCmove™-HD+ fuel cell module for mid-size utility vehicles and preview the new FCmove™-XD engine concept for heavy-duty vehicles at the IAA Transportation 2022 exhibition. the company in hall 24, stand C24.

The new FCmove™-XD engine concept is also incorporated into Quantron’s new 44t fuel cell truck which will premiere at the event.

Randy McEwenCEO of Ballard Power Systems, said:

IAA Transportation 2022 is a great opportunity for Ballard to demonstrate the significant progress we are making in the hard-to-reduce segment of heavy transportation.

“Our collaborations with automotive leaders such as MAHLE and Quantron, as well as strategic partners such as Forsee Power, Weichai and Linamar, accelerate our entry into the truck market and aim to have zero emission hydrogen trucks. on the road in the next 18 months.”

Robust modules for rock-solid performance

Designed to meet the specific power and performance demands of heavy hauling, Ballard’s fuel cell products are the longest running fuel cell solution on the market, powering more than 3,600 buses and trucks on more than 100 million kilometers in the world.

Targeting the 19t+ mid-duty segment, the 100kW FCmove™-HD+ fuel cell module has been designed to improve ease of integration into the vehicle.

The module is 40% more compact, over 30% lighter and with half the components of previous generations. This translates to a predicted 40% improvement in total life cycle cost while delivering industry-leading operational performance, high efficiency and a wide operating range.

A new platform designed for the most demanding needs

By extending the FCmove™ range to the heavy-duty and long-haul truck segment, Ballard and MAHLE have joined forces to develop a new fuel cell engine platform tailored for the high demands of the 19t+ segment, offering powers up to 360 kW.

Ballard’s 120kW fuel cell module is the centerpiece of the first engine concept, while MAHLE integrates factory balance components, thermal management and power electronics, optimizing engine performance. complete fuel cell system.

The program is a multi-year development during which MAHLE and Ballard will continue to evolve and refine the platform to ensure that fuel cells will provide the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) solution for heavy-duty vehicles. within ten years.

World Premiere of Quantron’s 44t Fuel Cell Truck – Powered by Ballard

Also on display at IAA Transportation 2022, Ballard’s partner Quantron will unveil a new 44t truck featuring Ballard’s FCmove™-XD concept engine – the first heavy-duty truck built with Ballard’s proven fuel cell capability.

Under a joint development agreement, Quantron will integrate Ballard fuel cell products for various truck applications in Europe and the United States, including last mile delivery, long haul tractors and garbage collection vehicles. Ballard will be Quantron’s exclusive fuel cell supplier for these truck platforms.

Quantron’s FCEV truck will be available from the second half of 2023 and offers a range of up to 700 km, a hydrogen storage capacity of over 50 kg and a battery capacity of 120 kWh.

Designed to provide uncompromising reliability for everyday use, it includes a cabin for overnight accommodation for long-haul transport and the ability to use ISO standard trailers.
