2023 Ram 2500: All Engine Options Available
The 2023 Ram 2500 is Ram’s mid-size heavy-duty truck offering, with a towing capacity between 14,370 lbs and 19,010 lbs. These differences are based on the engine the 2500 comes with. Three heavy-duty engines are available for 2023, along with a refreshed exterior and cabin. We’ll take a look.
Ram 2500 6.4L V8
The standard motor of Ram 2500 is the high performance 6.4 liter Hemi V8. It develops 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. It’s backed by Ram’s eight-speed automatic transmission. Ram chose to make this combo the only package available in its Power Wagon trucks, which are also only available as four-wheel-drive haulers. Although this is the standard engine, you can have two diesel engines as an option in all other trims offered by Ram.
The 6.4-liter package can tow 14,370 lb as a crew cab 4×4. Although the lowest rating for the 2500, it’s still more than most haulers will need. And it can take 3,240 pounds of cargo. Mileage ratings are not available because the EPA does not determine them for trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 8,500 lbs. The 6.4-liter also features cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing.
Ram 2500 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel inline-six
Ram trucks can be ordered with two-wheel-drive or combined four-wheel-drive with the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine. It develops 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the high-output diesel for 3500 trucks, the 6.7-liter diesel is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. For buyers, it should be noted that the Chevy Silverado 2500 and Ford F-250 models are equipped with modern 10-speed automatic transmissions.
One of the few drawbacks besides the transmission is the weight of the diesel. It weighs almost 500 pounds more than the 6.4-liter gasoline V8. Although it won’t win any drag races, it’s a highly refined diesel engine that can handle up to 3,240 lbs of loads and tow up to 16,870 lbs.
Ram 3500 6.7-liter high-output Cummins turbo diesel inline-six
The high-output turbo diesel inline-six engine is only available with the 3500, but we thought we’d include it for comparison. The numbers for this premium diesel engine are impressive. It develops 400 hp, 30 more than the regular 6.7-litre diesel. That adds a bit of grunt as it comes in at 1,075 lb-ft of torque. It’s a certain strain power.
As you can imagine, this also increases towing and loading capabilities. The maximum payload is 2,380 lbs, with a towing capacity of 19,010 lbs. If those numbers are too impressive for you, you’ll have to upgrade to the 3500 with either a single or dual rear axle setup.
