KARACHI: Running compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles for gasoline to cut travel costs has lost its appeal, as some stakeholders say the economy has fallen to just five percent while others say it is almost zero.

CNG was introduced in Pakistan in 1992 with great fanfare as an alternative and environmentally friendly fuel with the main objective of reducing expensive gasoline imports. For rapid development of this sector, the Musharraf government announced massive incentives in 2002, including duty exemptions on CNG plants and equipment, kits and cylinders. As a result, investors have set up CNG stations across the country amid a booming demand for fuel and has it been used to save more than 50% in costs compared to vehicles running. to gasoline.

However, with growing uncertainty about the availability of CNG amid severe gas shortages coupled with a skyrocketing price, a large number of passenger car owners have switched to gasoline despite the fact that both the cylinder and the kit remain intact in their vehicles.

Gasoline regains its status as the main fuel for vehicles

“After the latest increase, gasoline sells for 123.30 rupees per liter, but CNG still saves 5%,” said Ghayas Paracha, group leader of All Pakistan CNG (APCNGA).

In Punjab and Islamabad, CNG is sold at an average price of 121 rupees per liter. Despite very low savings, commercial transport owners and 20% private car owners still rely on CNG, he added.

Mr Paracha said the influx of imported 660cc second-hand vehicles equipped with EFI engines and high mileage had also taken a heavy toll on the demand for CNG as these vehicles cannot be converted to gas. .

The government allowed the import of CNG kits and cylinders last year after maintaining a long ban. With time ; new kits have been invented for EFI engines thus ensuring higher mileage than gasoline, but consumers are still hesitant to use these new kits, he said.

APCNGA coordinator for the Sindh area, Samir Najmul Hussain, said the days when private car owners saved 50% by using CNG for gasoline are over.

“Today there is no economy. Running the vehicle on CNG and gasoline is the same, ”he asserted, adding that CNG sales of 15 mmcfd in Sindh compared to pre-Covid sales of 70-90 mmcfd are sufficient to justify a massive switch to gasoline.

He recalled that the savings from CNG were 30% when gas was available at Rs 123 per kg, but now running a gas vehicle at a price of Rs 165 to 180 per kg in Sindh presents no appeal to consumers.

Mr Hussain claimed that more than 40 CNG outlets have closed in Sindh due to the low turnover of vehicles, which prevents owners from incurring huge expenses in electricity bills, labor wages. -work, etc.

He said the demand for CNG in Punjab is now 30mmcfd, up from 170mmcfd in 2014 when local natural gas was used. After the switch to RLNG in 2017, CNG sales in Punjab were estimated at 60mmcfd.

Karachi Transport Itehad (KTI) President Syed Irshad Hussain Bukhari said 95% of large private buses, minibuses and coaches were running on CNG when fuel was available at Rs 123 per kg a few months ago.

“Now carriers have switched to diesel after the sky-rocketing price of gas,” he said, claiming that 60% of public transport is now on CNG and 40% on diesel, as Rs 165-180 per kg of gasoline is not feasible for large vehicles. The total number of large buses, minibuses and coaches in Karachi is around 4,500. However, the price of diesel rose from Rs 110 per liter to Rs120 in January.

Despite the lack of clearance from the Sindh government, public transport owners hiked fares by Rs 5 on average last month to offset the impact of rising diesel and CNG prices.

A number of rickshaw owners have said they have stopped using CNG due to lingering anxiety over non-availability, especially in winter and even summer amid unbearable prices.

However, consumers are in limbo. Previously, rickshaw owners charged higher fares due to rising CNG prices. Over the past few months, they have found another excuse to charge more money by citing rising oil prices. In January, gasoline was available at Rs106, compared to Rs123.30 per liter currently.

Most rickshaw owners charge extra money by ensuring that passengers drive a rickshaw on gasoline rather than gasoline, while there are still a number of rickshaw owners- grows that still use gasoline and charge higher prices. Regardless of whether gasoline or gasoline is used, rickshaw owners charge Rs 500 for a trip of 12-13 km instead of Rs 400.

Whether CNG saves money or not, there has always been a dark side to using CNG to destroy gasoline engines over time, as no CNG engine has ever been developed. until now by foreign car assemblers. The money saved by consumers on the use of CNG was ultimately wasted due to the repair of the engine after an interval of two to four years depending on the intensive operation of the vehicle on gas.

For vehicles of 800 to 1000 cm3, the remake of the engine costs between 30,000 and 50,000 Rs, while it costs more on vehicles of 1300 cm3 and more.

Pakistan had recorded record gasoline sales of 0.731 million tonnes in May despite early market closures and the Eidul Fitr holiday, reaching 0.755 million tonnes in June and record sales 0.81 million tonnes in July . In August, gasoline sales amounted to 0.733 million tonnes. In July-August, gasoline sales increased by 10% to 1.549 million tonnes compared to the same period of 2020. Diesel sales in July-August had increased by 18% to 1390 million tonnes.

The Chrysler Corporation began researching gas turbine engines in the 1930s, but on-road vehicles were not on the list of potential applications.

Executive engineer George Huebner, the man who would become famous for building nuclear missiles, was among the select group of employees who worked on this secret aircraft-focused project. But, before he had such dark ideas, he began to research the feasibility of powering a car with one of these powertrains. Shortly after WWII Chrysler became interested in automotive applications which led to a separate project and naturally management chose Huebnerled to lead it.

After years of innovative work, the research team built a stable prototype. It made its public debut on June 16, 1954, under the hood of an otherwise stocked Plymouth Belvedere. Two years later, the second generation turbine was installed in another Plymouth driven by the famous engineer from New York to Los Angeles.

By this time people were taking notice and the enthusiasm for gas turbines was at an all time high. Ford and GM were working on similar designs, and the latter automaker even released a crazy concept called the Firebird XP-21, which looked like a fighter jet on wheels.

At Chrysler, development continued with the introduction of the third iteration of the engine. It was used on more of the company’s existing models, and by the late 1950s a whole turbine fleet was on display at all of the major auto shows around the world.

In the early 1960s, when the fourth generation turbine unit was completed, management decided to stop experimenting with existing models and create a new car around it. The design was passed down to former Ford stylist Elwood Engel whose portfolio includes the Ford Thunderbird. He envisioned an all-new car that would rival both the aforementioned model and the Chevrolet Corvette – in terms of looks, at least.

This vision came true in 1963 when the groundbreaking vehicle dubbed the uninspiring Turbine Car was unveiled at the Essex House Hotel in New York City. Chrysler has announced a limited production run of 50 units that could not be purchased but would instead be loaned out to the general public to test its practicality.

The hardtop coupe looked good, exuded luxury, and received a positive response. Its bodywork was handcrafted, assembled and painted in Italy by renowned design studio Carrozzeria Ghia, then shipped back to Detroit, where the powertrain and electronics were installed. From headlights to hubcaps and dashboard gauges, it was a collection of turbine-inspired shapes that culminated with a pair of huge exhaust tips protruding from its rear end.

The A-831 delivered 130 hp (97 kW) at 36,000 rpm with 425 lb-ft (576 Nm) of torque directed to the rear wheels via a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission. The innovative powertrain – which required a meticulous eight-step procedure to start – used a spark plug and around 80% fewer parts than a conventional piston unit, making it inherently more durable and easier to maintain. .

Apart from that, another major advantage was its ability to run on multiple fuels, such as unleaded gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and JP-4 jet fuel. According to the manufacturer, it could also burn a variety of flammable liquids like oven, peanut, or soybean oils. Plus, if those who loaned out the car didn’t like the smell of its exhaust, they could pour a few ounces of perfume into the tank, as one of the automaker’s representatives demonstrated during a press gala in Paris.

Another famous example of the use of an unusual liquid as fuel comes from former Mexican President Adolfo López Mateos. The story goes that after consulting with Chrysler engineers, he emptied several bottles of tequila into the tank and drove the car without encountering any problems.

Nonetheless, the kryptonite of the multi-purpose engine was leaded gasoline. It was able to burn the fuel, but the lead additive left deposits that would eventually damage its internal components, so people who ended up driving the vehicles were advised against using this type of gasoline in any way. circumstance.

The fifty cars initially announced were manufactured from 1963 to 1964. They were identical in all respects, including the metallic paint called Turbine Bronze. Chrysler gave them to people free of charge for three months, provided they keep a journal and provide detailed comments before returning the car. The user program ran from 1963 to 1966, with a total of 302 people participating. He helped engineers identify a range of issues with the turbine engine, including poor fuel consumption or starter malfunction at high altitude.

While the gas turbine project continued for another decade without major breakthroughs, most of these impressive cars were destroyed by Chrysler shortly after the user program ended. The company has kept two of them, six were delivered to various museums and one belongs to Jay Leno.

Not quite a production car, nor a typical concept, the Turbine Car was as close as ordinary people could drive a jet engine powered vehicle on public roads and one of the coolest cars ever made in the United States. United States.

We recommend that you watch the episode of Jay Leno’s Garage which you can find below if you want to learn more about this fascinating car and hear the daring sound of the jet as it starts up.

After only a year of production, the LT5 crate engine is listed on the Chevrolet website as discontinued. The most powerful engine ever offered in a Chevrolet-branded production vehicle was introduced for the 2019 model year with the pinnacle of the seventh-generation Vette, the mighty ZR1.

Often described as the ultimate small-block V8 produced by General Motors, the LT5 shares many parts with the LT4 that Chevrolet still offers in the form of a boxed engine. The block, heads, pistons and rods are carried over as the short list of differences begins with the dual fuel system.

Unlike the LS architecture of the previous generation, the LT offers direct fuel injection for all members of the family except the LT5. This guy rocks primary direct injection and extra port injection, two controllers for the fuel supply, and stronger crankshaft material.

Dubbed BAS for Big Ass Supercharger, the LT5 features an agitator hood due to the 2.65-liter blower with a 170-degree helical rotor set versus 160-degree for the LT4’s 1.7-liter blower. . Either way, the compressor actually spins a little slower at 15,860 rpm versus 21,000 rpm. Designed to peak at 13.9 pounds per square inch of boost, the blower needs 110 horsepower to spin.

Completed by the largest throttle body ever offered by General Motors at 95 millimeters against 87 millimeters for the LT4, this block develops a staggering power of 755 horsepower and a torque of 715 lb-ft (969 Nm). With Chevrolet Performance’s higher-flow intake that incorporates a dry media filter, the 6.2-liter LT5 engine can be upgraded to 772 force-fed ponies.

Although General Motors no longer offers the LT5 as a crate engine, aftermarket companies offer turnkey solutions at a steep price. Speartech, for example, currently lists their LT5 with a 10-speed automatic transmission for $ 37,500, excluding downpipes, catalytic converters, dry-sump oil tank and radiator. That’s the starting price for the Camaro 1SS, which comes standard with the 455-horsepower LT1 and a six-speed manual transmission.

The director of the Deschutes Telephone Company of Bend ordered the Holsman car in Chicago in 1906

One of the first automobiles to arrive in Bend was purchased in Chicago in 1906 and shipped by train to The Dalles. HC Ellis, director of the Deschutes Telephone Company of Bend ordered the car, a Holsman, which had a two-stroke engine with high wheels.

This vehicle was purchased due to the high road hubs in the areas of central Oregon served by the company. Some of the high centers were tree stumps. The roads of central Oregon at this time were used only by freight cars, stagecoaches, and buggies.

After the car arrived at The Dalles, it was difficult to find gasoline as there was none at The Dalles. A supply was obtained from Goldendale, Washington, after several days. Ellis shipped some of the fuel to the line so that it could be recovered in transit.

The car created considerable excitement in the Dalles as it traveled up the Columbia to the Deschutes River crossing at Freebridge. There was only one other car in The Dalles at that time.

The Holsman slowly ascended the Rattlesnake Canyon from the Deschutes crossing to Moro. He was late while he waited for the arrival of the shipped fuel. The car reached the head of Cow Canyon after sunset. Highway 97 is now a high-speed highway down the canyon, but by 1906 it was a very rough wagon route.

The car was moving very slowly on the narrow, steep road. The driver must have chosen the “path” by the dim lighting of the primitive headlights. The slope began to narrow and the passenger side of the car was dented and scuffed. Passing through a narrow notch, the fenders were torn from the vehicle. By the time the vehicle reached the bottom of the slope, the fenders were pieces of metal. Fenders have been removed at the Heisler Stage stop on Trout Creek. The staging operator kept the wings exposed for several years to show the madness of the “last generation machine” in the land of horses.

The car eventually reached Bend and was a wonder to the local residents, even though it looked awkward with no wings. Obtaining gasoline was a problem and it had to be shipped from Shaniko. Gas at that time ranged from 75 cents to $ 1 per gallon.

The car was used for several years by Ellis and his phone team. It was a rough introduction for the automobile to the primitive roads of central Oregon.

Alok Nanda, CEO, GE India Technology Center & CTO, GE South Asia

Adopting hybrid energy sources around the world can help meet the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, an industry official said on Friday.

Hybrid energy systems are defined as the integration of several types of power generation equipment such as electric power generators, electric energy storage systems and renewable energy sources.

“As we progress towards our 2050 goal of carbon neutrality and zero carbon emissions, we need to think about hybrid energy sources,” said Alok Nanda, CEO, GE India Technology Center & CTO, GE South Asia in a virtual address at the 17th Edition of the India Innovation Summit.

Nanda said climate change is a real concern and the energy transitions underway today must be done with the needs of future generations in mind.

He said that one of the main reasons for climate change is that 41% of co2 (carbon) emissions are generated by the electricity sector, while 26% by industry, 25% by transport and 9 % by buildings.

“If you’re coming for transportation, we’ve talked a lot about electric cars, but if those electric car batteries are charged with electricity generated by technology that produces a lot of carbon then … we would actually be pollute our environment (indirectly). We need a holistic approach, ”said Nanda.

Explaining further, he said that if all coal-fired power plants are replaced with an equivalent capacity of renewable energy, it will result in a carbon reduction of 25-40%. If coal-fired power plants around the world are replaced with an equivalent capacity of gas turbines or gas power plants, CO2 emissions would be reduced by 50 to 60%.

“We will have to work towards hybrids. Hybrids are inevitable and as we move towards this we can make real change while realizing the energy trilemma of making electricity affordable, reliable and sustainable while meeting security needs. energy, then we add carbon capture and hydrogen to that mix and bring that (carbon reduction) to 100 pc, which is necessary, ”he said.

Few Skoda Kushaq owners have complained about their car being stopped

Launched earlier this year in June, Kushaq is already ranked among the top 3 compact SUVs in the country

With its gorgeous profile and full range of features, Kushaq has become one of the favorites in the compact SUV space. It is currently the best-selling product in Skoda’s portfolio in India. It is the first Skoda car to be completely designed and developed in India.

However, in recent times there have been some concerns about the outages reported by customers. Problems such as engine shutdown and loss of power have been reported along with a warning light on the Electronic Power Control (EPC). The latter indicates a potential problem with the fuel injection, accelerator pedal, cruise control or traction control.

Kushaq problem is “solved” according to Skoda

Amid growing discussions on social media, Skoda India brand manager Zac Hollis ensured the issue was being addressed from above. He said all new dispatches will be fitted with “more robust fuel pumps.” The problems with Kushaq were probably due to the varying quality of fuel in the country. With a more robust fuel pump, these issues should be resolved entirely.

For existing customers, the replacement will be provided free of charge at the service center. Customers will be contacted individually, as their dealerships have stock of new fuel pumps. It is not clear whether the company is calling this a Skoda Kushaq recall or not.

In a previous communication, Zac had pointed out that certain quality problems are likely with every new car launch anywhere in the world. In the case of Kushaq, the problems were relatively fewer. He added that Skoda’s technical team in India and Europe are working tirelessly to identify the issues and find a solution.

Kushaq’s bookings surpassed 10,000 in just three months. Monthly sales are around 2k. Skoda appears to have done the right thing to act quickly to resolve customer issues. Had things been delayed, it likely would have negatively impacted Kushaq’s sales.

Some customers who booked their Kushaq could be seen expressing their doubts on social media. Hope that replacing the fuel pump will solve the problems faced by users.

Car recalls in 2021

As automakers source parts from multiple suppliers, there is always a risk that things will not work out as desired. Earlier this month, India’s largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, announced a recall of the petrol variants of Ertiga, Ciaz, S-Cross, Brezza and XL6. The recall concerned specific units manufactured between May 4, 2018 and October 27, 2020. The recall is aimed at testing a potentially defective generator set. The replacement will be completely free.

Earlier this year in July, Mahindra announced the recall of around 600 units of its diesel vehicles. These were manufactured at the company’s Nashik plant between June 21 and July 2, 2021. The recall involved inspecting the engine for premature wear caused by the use of contaminated fuel. The rectification / replacement was provided free of charge to customers.

More than 113,400 Michiganders were working in alternative energy at the end of 2020, according to a study published by Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) and Clean Energy Trust.

The report comes as the US Congress and the Biden administration consider legislation to boost federal investment in clean energy and clean vehicles, and as the state continues to implement Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive action on the climate.

“This industry is poised for growth like we’ve never seen before,” said Micaela Preskill, Midwestern advocate for E2. “The economy is in our favor. Clean energy is now the cheapest energy in most parts of the world, and we are seeing record investments in clean energy companies.

Preskill added that in order for the industry to reach its full potential and mitigate the effects of climate change, it is incumbent on lawmakers to adopt the right policies. According to the analysis, policies that move Michigan closer to its goal of decarbonization by 2050 would help create tens of thousands of new jobs for decades as Michigan overtakes the immediate recovery.

“We have a model in the Biden administration’s Build Back Better plan and a step in the right direction with the Senate passing the infrastructure bill. Creating jobs and helping our economy and environment shouldn’t be a partisan issue, and Midwestern congressmen on both sides of the aisle will be key to implementing the Build Back Better plan.

Like most other sectors of the economy, clean energy was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic downturn in 2020. According to this year’s Clean Jobs Midwest report, 2020 was the first decline in the economy. year on year since E2 and Clean Energy Trust. started tracking clean energy jobs in Michigan in 2016.

At one point, more than 31,000 Michigan clean energy workers had filed for unemployment, but the industry fell 20.4% in the second half of the year to recoup about two-thirds of the jobs initially lost. Final employment figures for 2020 represent a 9.5% drop in Michigan’s clean energy workforce from 2019, or 11,900 jobs.

Last year’s job losses represented a dramatic change of pace for the industry. In the three years to 2020, for example, clean energy jobs grew almost three times faster than overall employment statewide.

Energy efficiency jobs saw the biggest decline, according to the analysis, with Michigan’s largest clean energy employer now employing 74,242. The industry shed 11,081 jobs, down about 13% during the year, workers were barred from entering homes and offices due to pandemic lockdowns.

Other clean energy sectors also saw significant declines in 2020, including renewables (5.9%), grid and storage (8.1%) and clean fuels (4.1%) .

“There is good news,” said Ian Adams, Managing Director of the Clean Energy Trust. “The industry is rebounding and has grown faster than the economy as a whole during the second half of the year. Some other bright spots: Wind power, these jobs grew 4% last year, despite the economic downturn, and now employ nearly 40,000 people in the Midwest, and advanced transportation jobs have increased across the board. states in the region, thanks to the growth of hybrids and electric vehicles. “

Michigan’s clean energy jobs have rebounded faster than the state’s overall workforce, according to the analysis. Michigan can take advantage of the sector’s high job growth potential by adopting policies that support renewables, fuel efficiency and electric vehicles, the report says.

The electric vehicle and hybrid electric vehicle industries now employ around 24,268 Michiganders as a growing number of automakers have announced changes to produce 100% zero-emission vehicles.

Renewable energies now employ 10,767 Michiganders, including 4,967 in wind power and 4,555 in solar.

Additionally, grid and storage employ 3,579 Michiganders, and clean fuels employ 600. Small businesses are the engine of Michigan’s clean energy sector – in 2020, 77.9% of clean energy companies of Michigan employed fewer than 20 people, according to the report. Clean Energy employed workers in all 83 counties and 14 congressional districts of Michigan.

“Energy is an economic engine in my district, with clean energy jobs supporting thousands of families,” said Aric Nesbitt, interim president of the Michigan Senate for the 26th district. “These jobs were growing three times faster than the overall economy leading to the pandemic and have recovered faster. Long-term, sustainable jobs that cannot be outsourced will create a strong future for Michigan and our communities.

Nationally, clean energy employment ended 2020 down by about 307,000 jobs from the peak of nearly 3.4 million in 2019, recovering about 300,000 jobs nationwide from June to December – a rate faster than job growth nationwide during this period.

Methodology

The analysis is based on preliminary employment data collected and analyzed by BW Research Partnership for the 2021 US Energy and Employment Report (USEER).

USEER analyzes data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Quarterly Employment and Wage Census to track employment in many subsectors of energy production, transmission, and distribution. In addition, USEER 2021 is based on a unique additional survey of 35,000 business representatives across the United States.

The rise in fuel prompted matatu owners to raise ticket prices, and the action devastated passengers.

Private motorists also deplore the rise in the price of fuel. Therefore, it is ideal for motorists to reduce their fuel consumption and save money by using the tips below recommended by auto experts and mechanics.

Driving your car less is the most efficient approach to reducing your fuel consumption. Only use your car when necessary.

Consider walking or even cycling if you need to move a short distance, like going to the store or taking your child to the bus stop. Not only will you save money, but you will also benefit from the workout.

Use the correct gear if your car has a manual gearbox (stick shift).

If you’re towing a lot of weight, lower a gear so your engine doesn’t have to work as hard as it should.

When traveling at higher speeds, be sure to use a higher gear. You have to be careful with your engine. You are wasting fuel if your engine seems too much or too little.

Reduce aggressive driving

Excessive speed, too sudden acceleration and too hasty stopping are all unwanted habits.

These three acts result in a significant increase in fuel consumption, according to auto mechanics. They advise motorists to slow down and keep at the same speed as traffic.

Leave enough distance between you and the person in front of you so that you can come to a complete stop without slamming the brakes. Where possible, slowing down smoothly and without braking can help improve your fuel mileage.

Check your tire pressure frequently

Your tires may be underinflated even if your tire pressure gauge is not flashing brightly, resulting in a loss of fuel efficiency.

Auto experts recommend checking tire pressure before starting your car for the day, as cold tires will provide the most accurate pressure reading.

If your tires seem underinflated, you’ve probably already waited until the last minute to fill them up.

Under-inflated tires reduce traction and increase the number of rotations your tires have to cover the same distance.

It is also said that over-inflating and under-inflating can negatively impact your fuel mileage, so be sure to fill your tires to the recommended PSI.

Close windows if possible

According to aerodynamic experts, the more aerodynamic your vehicle, the better its mileage.

Keeping your windows down while driving increases your vehicle’s resistance to wind and drag. It is generally fine to drive with the windows down if you are doing less than 35 mph.

However, it would be best to leave the windows open at higher speeds to reduce drag and improve fuel mileage.

Reduce the use of air conditioning

Did you know that using air conditioning in your car affects your fuel mileage?

According to automotive experts, using a vehicle’s air conditioning system uses more fuel than when the air conditioning is turned off. Of course, there will be occasions when the heat and humidity will force you to turn on the air conditioner.

However, use the air conditioner sparingly. Use low temperature air conditioning if you have to choose between keeping your windows down and using high speed air conditioning.

If you are able to use the train to get to work, take advantage. You will also have escaped the threat of fuel and traffic.

You might want to lose the convenience of your car a bit to save a few parts while you wait for the economic storm to end.
